    Education and smoking behavior in Brazil: decision to smoke and daily cigarette consumption intensity

    This study analyses the relationship between education and smoking behavior. Our empirical models were estimated using data for Brazilian citizens from the 2008 Special Survey on Tobacco Addiction. We estimated probit, sample-selection, and zero-inflated negative binomial models. Empirical analyses for women and men were conducted separately. We found that higher education levels are associated with lower smoking probability and lower daily consumption intensity.

    Joint Effects of Shared and Transformational Leadership on Performance in Street-Level Bureaucracies: Evidence from the Educational Sector

    Recent theories of public administration emphasize the importance of leadership as shared property. This research focuses on the role of the interaction between vertical and shared leadership in promoting agency performance. Specifically, it examines the joint effects of shared leadership and transformational leadership on team empowerment and performance in public settings. Based on field study data collected from 74 street-level bureaucracies and 423 public servants in Brazil, we find evidence that vertical transformational leadership strengthens the direct relationship between shared leadership and team empowerment as well as the indirect relationship between shared leadership and school performance through team empowerment (a moderated-mediation model). The findings of this study suggest that greater attention should be paid to the dynamics of shared and vertical leadership structures to better understand their consequences for team pro cesses and outcomes in public settings.

    A influência do rendimento esportivo no desempenho econômico-financeiro: uma análise com clubes de futebol brasileiros durante 2013-2017

    O estudo examinou a relação entre o desempenho esportivo e o desempenho econômico-financeiro no ano subsequente, com base nas fontes de receita dos clubes desportivos brasileiros entre 2013 a 2017. O desempenho esportivo foi medido com a posição no campeonato nacional e o resultado geral em todos os campeonatos. Já para o desempenho econômico-financeiro, utilizou-se a receita líquida, broadcasting, match day, commercial e venda de jogadores. Usando análise de dados em painel, o desempenho esportivo afeta positiva e significativamente o desempenho econômico-financeiro dos clubes, contudo os efeitos foram heterogêneos quando são comparadas diferentes medidas de desempenho esportivo e tipos de receita. Por fim, há confirmação do padrão de mercado exportador no Brasil, com a necessidade de alienação de atletas, uma vez que a receita de vendas de jogadores foi a variável mais explicada pelo desempenho esportivo anterior.
