dc.description.otherThis paper examines the impact of the minimum wage on inequality in Brazil over the past twelve years by comparing changes in the wage distribution of workers during months associated with increases in the minimum wage with periods associated with no increases. Since increases of the minimum wage occurred in different months over the years, we can identify its effect on inequality even after controlling for month dummies. Our method avoids problems of decomposition-order dependence since other possible determinants of inequality, such as education and wage structure, remain constant over short periods of time. In addition, the method avoids spillover effects because we do not use workers in specific percentiles as control groups. Our results indicate that minimum wage increases explain all the reduction in wage inequality in Brazil between 2002 and 2013 and affected workers in different percentiles. Moreover, the effects were persistent over time did not cause adverse effects on employment.pt_BR
