dc.description.otherThis paper recovers selected themes in the development of the Social Network research in order to highlight the debates, criticisms and responses. Substantively, the article argues that the SNA scholarship mainstream emerged around the idea of ‘social capital’, accompanied with several methodological and theoretical shifts: emphasis on nomological laws, unit of analysis focused on individuals, simplification of data collection, emphasis on economic gains, and lack of agency. In tandem, context-specific and rich in meaning studies lost their hegemony. The establishment of the ‘social capital’ paradigm in the SNA scholarship was received with stark criticism. This paper highlights two lines of criticism: ‘Structural determinism and Structuralist instrumentalism’ and the dichotomy between ‘meaning of ties and forms’. SNA mainstream scholars were able to respond and incorporate several innovations into the discipline’s core. However, several attacks reveal paradigmatic boundaries that are difficult to overcome.pt_BR
