We use a sharp regression discontinuity design to assess the effects of a national policy implemented in Brazil to avoid elective cesareans. The policy prohibits elec tive cesarean sections (c-sections) before the 39th gestational week (gestational age restriction component) and allows elective c-sections starting at the 39th week, as long as pregnant women are informed of the risks and benefits involved in the dif ferent delivery methods (awareness component). We find evidence that the policy increases the probability of labor by 1.8 percentage point and decreases the prob ability of cesareans by 2.9 percentage points for low-risk first births that occur in public health facilities. The evidence suggests that policy effectiveness acts through the awareness component, with mothers switching away from cesareans to vaginal deliveries after spontaneous labor.pt_BR
