dc.description.other | This research analyzes the effects of nonprofit organizations – acting alone or in partnership with the government – on human development, violence, and income inequality in Brazil. Governance studies claim that government-nonprofit collaboration lead to improved outcomes. This research tests this hypothesis in 5,562 Brazilian municipalities using ordinary least squares regressions and spatial models. Spatial analysis enables discussions about diffusion and distinct effects occurring across different regions. My findings indicate that government-nonprofit collaborations in Brazil are associated with better human development, but worse indicators of violence and income inequality. The outcomes from nonprofits’ autonomous action are different according to their areas of activity. Faith-based and social welfare nonprofits, for instance, are linked to improved human development and reduction of income inequality; while professional associations present the opposite results in these areas. These, however, are results for the country overall. Spatial methods also reveal how these findings vary in different areas. Advocacy and religious organizations, for instance, are associated with reduced inequality in certain areas of the country, and higher inequality in other areas. Neither nonprofits’ autonomous actions nor their collaboration with the government seem to reduce homicide rates | pt_BR |
