dc.description.otherOver the past decades, many poor economies have experienced asigniÖcant increase in schooling but low growth in GDP per capita,leading to a reduction in the educational gap and an increase in theincome gap with respect to the developed countries. To reconcile thesefacts, we propose a recursive general equilibrium model, calibrated tosome African economies, which considers human capital accumulationas a function of life expectancy, educational costs and productivitygains. The model estimates that most of the increase in educationlevels in these economies between 1970 and 2008 was explained bythe sharp decline in the implicit costs of education. The impact oflongevity increase is modest.pt_BR
