Investigando a relação entre o desmatamento da Amazônia e o mercado de produtos florestais primários

Abstract

A Amazônia é um ecossistema de extrema importâcia global devido à sua abundância de recursos naturais valiosos. A amplitude do território aliada à fraca capacidade de monitoramento dos direitos de propriedade na região impulsionam a formação de um mercado ilegal de tais recursos, que trazem consigo uma série de problemas ambientais e sociais. Esse trabalho busca entender as ligações entre o mercado de produtos florestais primários e desmatamento na região amazônica entre os anos de 2012 e 2022. Nesse relatório, construímos uma base de dados que reúne infromações sobre os fluxos de toras, bem como diversas medidas de desmatamento no território amazônico no nível municipal. Em seguida, descrevemos uma série de características do mercado de toras de madeira e encontramos uma correlação positiva entre o desmatamento em um município e o volume de toras que sai dele. Em particular, queremos quantificar a relação entre o mercado legal de madeira (medido pelos fluxos oficiais de toras) e o desmatamento, procurando identificar quais fatores podem atuar como possíveis barreiras ou potencializadores do mercado ilegal de produtos florestais primários.The Amazon is a globally significant ecosystem due to its abundance of valuable natural resources. The vastness of the territory, combined with weak capacity to monitor property rights in the region, drives the formation of an illegal market for these resources, bringing with it a series of environmental and social problems. This work seeks to understand the connections between the market for primary forest products and deforestation in the Amazon region between 2012 and 2022. In this report, we constructed a database that compiles information on log flows, as well as various measures of deforestation in the Amazon territory at the municipal level. We then describe a series of characteristics of the log market and find a positive correlation between deforestation in a municipality and the volume of logs that leave it. In particular, we aim to quantify the relationship between the legal timber market (measured by official log flows) and deforestation, seeking to identify which factors may act as potential barriers or drivers of the illegal market for primary forest products.
