dc.description.otherBy reconstructing the social networks among Jazz musicians, from 1930 to 1969, I obtain topography of band leaders and their respective styles. The field of Jazz makes a transition from a centralized to a more decentralized one. The findings suggest one might explain the locus of new style emergence by the field’s structure evolution. When the field is centralized, innovations are born in the core of the field. When it becomes decentralized, one observes innovation at the fringes. The prominent band leaders’ profiles change: at its early history, the jazz field is dominated by white musicians who played mainstream styles and were relatively a long time in the field. In later phases, the most prominent leaders were relatively younger musicians promoting avant-guard styles. By recovering the field typology of “coercive” and “mimetic” fields, I propose that an intermediary stage (i.e. “normative”) might take place. At this stage, field conflict occurs in tandem with higher conformity to professional standards.pt_BR
