| dc.description.abstract | A história econômica é de fundamental importância para entender os erros do passado e enfrentar melhor os problemas no futuro. Este estudo tem como objetivo avaliar o impacto das políticas econômicas (monetária e fiscal) nas flutuações do PIB brasileiro entre 1850 e 1945. São estimados dois modelos de vetores auto-regressivos, sendo o primeiro entre hiato do produto real e inflação e o segundo entre hiato do produto real e a variação no déficit fiscal real. Após a estimação foram feitos testes que mostram que as variáveis inflação e variação no déficit fiscal real não explicam as flutuações do produto no período analisado. Por último, é discutido o papel dessas políticas em dois momentos históricos: o Encilhamento e a Crise de 1929, justificando a possibilidade de influenciar positivamente o produto nesses períodos específicos e as limitações dessas políticas. | pt_BR |
| dc.description.other | The study of economic history is essential to understand the mistakes made in the past and to avoid the same in the future. This study has the objective of evaluating the impacts of fiscal and monetary policy in the brazilian business cycles from 1850 to 1945. We used two vector autoregressive models, the first one between the output gap and inflation, the second one between the output gap and the variation in the real fiscal deficit. The results of the econometric tests suggest that the variables inflation and variation in the real fiscal deficit don't explain the business cycles in this sample. In the last section we discuss two episodes in the brazilian history: the Encilhamento and the 1929 crisis. We argue for the possibility of a positive effect of monetary policy during the Encilhamento and the positive effect of the fiscal policy in the 1929 crisis. We also argue about the limitations of these policies in the rest of the sample. | pt_BR |
