dc.description.otherIn this paper, we examine the impact of covid hospitalizations on hospitalizations by other causes and deaths caused by other diseases. In order to do that, we build a monthly panel of municipalities with data on deaths and hospitalizations due to various causes. We find that hospitalizations by other causes fall in the peak-pandemic periods, while deaths by other diseases rise, especially deaths at home. The effects are greater in the public health system and among the elderly, nonwhite and illiterates. The fall in hospitalizations by other causes seems to be related with the overcrowding of hospitals due to covid, along with the fear of covid infection. The main causes of deaths are neoplasms, mental disorders and diseases related to the nervous, circulatory and endocrine system. Our results suggest that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on mortality was greater than mortality due to covid cases.pt_BR
