Working Paper The impact of civil status on women’s wages in Brazil(2011) Madalozzo, Regina Carla; Gomes, Carolina FloresA união consensual, também conhecida como cohabitação, é um fenômeno que tem sido cada vez mais freqüente nas últimas décadas, não somente no Brasil, mas também nos mais diversos países. Ao mesmo tempo, surgiram estudos sobre o impacto do casamento no salário das mulheres. O presente artigo analisa o efeito do estado civil das mulheres que residem no Brasil em seus salários. Para tanto, esse estudo utiliza as características individuais para a análise dos efeitos colhidas através do Censo Brasileiro realizado em 2000. As conclusões mostram que existe diferença salarial de até 15% entre mulheres casadas e solteiras e essa diferença é de até 3% entre mulheres casadas e cohabitantes.Working Paper The Impact of Tax Exemptions on Labor Registration: The Case of Brazilian Domestic Workers(2011) Madalozzo, Regina Carla; ADRIANA BRUSCATO BORTOLUZZOLabor informality has long been a subject of public concern in Brazil, and across different occupations, domestic workers are the epitome of informal workers. In 2006, the Brazilian President approved a law to encourage employers to formally register their domestic employees this specific occupation. The present study uses various statistical approaches to investigate the effectiveness of this new law. Using different techniques, our results show that the law had no relevant impact on the formalization rates of domestic workers. Explanations for this result suggest that uncoordinated public policy initiatives may emphasize mixed goals, which prevents the achievement of any of the goals. On one hand, there continues to be a need for policy-level incentives that allow workers to deduct labor social security contributions from their personal income taxes, while on the other hand, other public policy initiatives, such as increases in the real minimum wage, provide disincentives to formalization.Working Paper A Model of Attendance Demand at the Brazilian Football League(2008) Madalozzo, Regina Carla; Villar, Rodrigo BerberThis paper aims to analyze and identify variables that influence public attendance at football matches in Brazil. Deriving a demand curve for public attendance at football stadiums in the Brazilian Football League from 2003 through 2006, this paper highlights four main explicative variables: stadium infrastructure, team performance, expected quality, and uncertainty. Data were drawn from over 1,800 matches and the econometric models uses OLS regressions and panel data form. The study analyzes fixed and random effects models in an attempt to identify the most efficient model. The results reflect a series of variables that influence attendance, particularly ticket price, local derbies, the hometown of the visiting team (Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo), recent performance, risk of relegation, and the role of promotional strategies in distributing tickets.Working Paper Market and Home Production: Gender Differences in Brazil(2009) Madalozzo, Regina CarlaMuitos países apresentaram aumento nos índices de participação das mulheres no mercado de trabalho no século vinte. Entretanto, poucos deles podem se orgulhar das condições de trabalho destas mulheres no mesmo. Este artigo estuda a distribuição ocupacional de ambos os gêneros de 1978 a 2007 no Brasil. Ele mostra que as mulheres entraram em algumas ocupações tradicionalmente masculinas, mas retêm alta participação nas ocupações femininas da mesma forma que há 30 anos atrás.
