Tese Unconditional Quantile Selection Models with a Gender Wage Gap Application(2023) Sunao, Stefanie SayuriWe propose constructing a consistent estimator that addresses the problem of sample selection in unconditional quantile models. The proposed approach is based on three steps: (i) estimation of a control function using a logistic distribution regression; (ii) construction of a counterfactual distribution of the latent dependent variable conditional on the previously estimated control function; (iii) application of the recentered influence function (RIF) on the estimated counterfactual distribution and, finally, we run an ordinary least square regression. Besides this theoretical contribution, we propose an empirical application to measure the impact of maternity on the gender wage gap using Danish data.Tese Essays in Financial Economics(2023) Baglioni, TommasoThis dissertation studies topics in financial economics and contributes to the literature on equity return dynamics around scheduled Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) announcements by highlighting new facts and presenting stronger empirical results than many articles in the international literature. This thesis is composed by three closely related papers, which are reported in this essay as chapters. These articles use U.S. intraday data and could be extended to other contexts, in accordance to data availability. The main variables of interest, which are constructed using intraday data on E-Mini S&P 500 futures at one-minute frequency, are the pre- FOMC announcement return and the post-FOMC announcement return, i.e., the 24-hour return in advance of the FOMC announcement and the return from the minute of the announcement until the end of the trading day, respectively. All articles relate to the anticipation and reaction of the stock market to monetary policy announcements and contribute empirically to a better understanding of the behavior of the stock market around monetary policy decisions. In particular, the three papers add to the empirical understanding of the facts described by Lucca and Moench (2015), who document a large average excess returns in U.S. equities before scheduled FOMC announcements, a phenomenon that they term “pre-FOMC announcement drift.” They show that half of the excess return in U.S. equities over the period 1980 – 2011 accrues in the 24 hours before scheduled FOMC announcements, whereas the average post-announcement return is approximately zero. They conclude that this unconditional excess return is not directly related to the actual FOMC monetary policy decision, highlighting a puzzle that is difficult to explain with standard asset pricing theory. Following Lucca and Moench (2015), a vast literature that explores the impact of FOMC announcements on financial markets began studying the pre-FOMC announcement drift and other related patterns around monetary policy announcements. In contrast with the previous literature, which focuses mainly on the pre-FOMC announcement drift and on the daily stock market return of the FOMC announcement day, this thesis focuses on the time series variation in both pre- and post-announcement return and highlights new interesting patterns related to the post-announcement return as well. In fact, only a handful of papers document patterns related to the stock market behaviour from the monetary policy announcement (or just before) until the end of the trading day. While those few papers focus on the immediate reaction of the stock market to the announcement, conditioned thus on the type of monetary policy news, the first two chapters of this thesis focus on the predictability of the post-announcement return (given the information publicly available before the announcement). The focus of the third article is on the predictability of the pre-announcement return. The first chapter, a joint work with Ruy Monteiro Ribeiro, is entitled “The FOMC Announcement Reversal.” This paper shows that part of the stock market reaction after the FOMC announcement is predictable, as the market tends to overreact in advance of the announcement and to correct afterward. In particular, there is a negative relationship between pre-FOMC announcement returns and post-FOMC announcement returns, independent of the level of uncertainty and sample period. To exploit this finding, this paper proposes and tests a reversal strategy consisting in buying (selling) E-Mini S&P 500 just before the announcement, if the pre-FOMC announcement return is negative (positive), and closing the position at the end of the trading day. Over the period 1997 – 2020, considering 180 scheduled FOMC announcements, this strategy generates Sharpe ratios about 2.5 times greater than the pre-FOMC announcement drift puzzle of Lucca and Moench. The second chapter, entitled “Liquidity Premium Around FOMC Announcements,” is a joint work with Alessandro Giannozzi, Ruy Monteiro Ribeiro, and Oliviero Roggi. This paper explores the relationship between stock market liquidity and stock market return around scheduled FOMC meetings and highlights the importance of liquidity in the predictability of returns that follow the monetary policy decision. This article shows that the classic liquidity measure proposed by Amihud (2002) is empirically relevant to predict the stock market behavior, despite the fact that we are analyzing the most liquid market in the world. The main finding is that the post-FOMC announcement interval is characterized by a conditional liquidity premium, suggesting that market liquidity is an important determinant of the FOMC premium. In contrast, the unconditional liquidity premium is not statistically significant. The third chapter, which is a joint work with Ruy Monteiro Ribeiro, is entitled “Corporate Bonds Distress and FOMC Announcement Returns.” This paper documents that the ex-ante level of the corporate bond market distress is a good predictor for the pre-FOMC announcement equity market return, which tends to be positive (negative) when distress on the week before the announcement is high (low). Distress subsumes the relevant information of equity market uncertainty, highlighted by the previous literature as a good predictor for the pre-FOMC announcement return. This article also shows that, on FOMC announcement days, the effect of distress is heterogeneous across industries, as it is much more pronounced on the return of the industries that are more sensitive to credit, suggesting that distress is part of the credit channel of monetary policy transmission.Tese Essays on Ambiguity and Decision Theory(2023) Wang, Henrique Yu JiunnEsta tese analisa três casos diferentes relacionados à incerteza. O primeiro capítulo analisa como o tamanho da cidade afeta o perfil salarial dos trabalhadores. Ele mostra que o prêmio salarial urbano estático é aproximadamente semelhante entre grupos educacionais, mas os efeitos de crescimento salarial estão concentrados em jovens com ensino superior. Minhas estimativas indicam que os efeitos no crescimento salarial representam quase metade do hiato salarial de tamanho de cidade entre individuos com ensino superior e quase dois terços do hiato de prêmio universitário de tamanho de cidade. Também apresento evidências de que as transições de emprego são fundamentais para entender os efeitos de crescimento salarial. O segundo capítulo estuda como a densidade de emprego afeta as escolhas de localização dos empregadores dentro de uma cidade. Exploro a abertura de grandes edifícios comerciais em São Paulo e comparo bairros mais próximos e mais distantes para analisar as mudanças na atividade econômica de diferentes setores. Concluo que escritórios de alta qualificação e serviços locais aumentam differencialmente sua presença em bairros próximos. Estimo que, para cada dois empregos adicionais criados por escritórios de alta qualificação, um emprego é criado por serviços locais, o que interpreto como um efeito multiplicador. O choque de emprego aumenta a produtividade de escritórios de alta qualificação. Novas empresas nesse setor são então atraídas, ampliando a demanda por bens não comercializáveis. Consequentemente, a presença de serviços locais também aumenta. O terceiro capítulo também explora novos edifícios comerciais para investigar a existência de fricções espaciais na busca por emprego. Especificamente, analisamos como a proximidade de novas vagas afeta a probabilidade de ser contratado. Propomos uma metodologia que considera múltiplas fontes de seleção para interpretar os efeitos de distância como provenientes de fricções. Concluímos que indivíduos cujo local de trabalho é mais próximo de um novo prédio antes de sua abertura têm maior probabilidade de trabalhar lá no futuro. Essa relação é mais evidente para trabalhadores com menor qualificação.Tese Essays on Empirical Corporate Finance(2023) Macoris, Lucas SerrãoThis thesis has three chapters, all of them aimed at empirically investigating a specific research question related to the Corporate Finance literature. In the first chapter of the thesis, I investigate the relationship between liquidity shocks and Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) activity during peridos of credit supply shortfalls and show that firms that have higher levels of expiring debt maturities in the year of the credit shock are more likely to become targets in M&A deals. Moreover, these firms invest more and issue more debt after the deal relative to other financially constrained firms that did not undergo such transactions. Finally, we show that these firms are shifting from issuing debt in their own countries to issuing debt in countries with historically higher issuance volume, show ing that M&As can work as leeway to relieve financing frictions in periods when credit supply frictions are more prevalent. In the second chapter of the thesis, I study the effects of the introduction of the solvency margin rule in the Brazilian healthcare industry using a differences-in-differences approach to show that more exposed firms grew their customer base less than their counterparts, and that this effect persists even after three years of the solvency margin implementation. When it comes to firm-level prospects, I show that this higher exposure also affects firms’ future financial fundamentals, firms’ likelihood of being delisted, and is negatively correlated with changes in the median price levels for customer healthcare plans. Finally, to the extent that this differential growth trend is capable of shifting aggregate industry fundamentals, I show that states with a higher portion of exposed firms saw their market concentration surge 22% more than their counterparts. Finally, the third and last chaption of this thesis studies the potential determinants of firms’ debt structure decisions over time by studying the interplay between ownership and debt structure decisions. By exploiting exogenous variation in mutual funds’ passive ownership due to Russell 1000/2000 index assignments between 2010 and 2019, the estimates presented in this chapter show that a one standard deviation increase in passive ownership is related to a 29% decrease in debt concentration. In a subsequent set of results, it is possible to see that results are entirely driven by smaller firms, are mostly leaned towards increases in Commercial Papers, Term Loans and Revolving Credit, and are unrelated to other firms’ ex-post fundamentals.Tese Stakeholder Governance and Decision-Making: Dealing with Preference Heterogeneity and Uncertainty(2024) Freire, Vitor de Barros SantosThis dissertation examines mechanisms of strategic stakeholder governance, advancing the understanding of how firms can incorporate diverse stakeholder perspectives in high-level strategic decision-making forums such as corporate boards. Central to this research objective is the understanding that value creation demands governance structures that reconcile heterogeneous stakeholder interests and, at the same time, deal with potentially escalating decision-making costs and promote adaptation to changing circumstances. The dissertation is comprised of three chapters examining the nuanced challenges and mechanisms concerning corporate boards, blending theoretical propositions and empirical testing using laboratory experimental methods. The initial chapter presents a decision-based theory of stakeholder governance. It explores the interplay between stakeholder engagement and decision rights allocation within corporate boards, when facing contingencies like the boundaries on stakeholder claims (the extent of stakeholders' interests considered) and the nature of the decision problem under consideration. The chapter follows a comparative organizational analysis and examines different governance patterns that fit these contingencies to propose a combination of aspects related to the allocation of decision rights, corporate objectives, and deliberation mechanisms aligned with the contingencies to facilitate decision-making and adaptation, resulting in a theory of stakeholder governance explaining the arrangement of decision-making forums to accommodate distinct stakeholder demands. The second chapter empirically examines a specific mechanism of board decision-making under uncertainty. The research investigates conditions in which boards tend to make choices that avoid negative externalities and safeguard vulnerable stakeholders. The chapter tests the hypothesis that when facing uncertain outcomes and divergent opinions, boards following a unanimous rule for decision tend to opt for choices that mitigate negative externalities over higher financial gains. The experimental results show that, under such conditions, boards have a surprisingly strong preference for the alternative that avoids negative externalities, even when it entails lower financial results. The chapter then investigates the factors leading the boards to adopt such a cautious attitude and argues that besides an increased perception of uncertainty in groups, the critical influence of the unanimity rule is likely a main factor. The final chapter, then, delves into the comparative effects of the unanimity rule in comparison with the widely adopted majority decision rule. This chapter builds upon the same behavioral mechanisms discussed in the second chapter and examines the trade-offs between adopting a unanimity rule versus a majority vote. Experimental results show that unanimity enhances the board's tendency towards precautionary decisions and also increases confidence in the collective decision, yet it also necessitates more deliberation efforts. The extra efforts can complicate decision-making in business environments that require prompt decisions, suggesting a critical trade-off between inclusive decision-making and swift decision-making. In sum, this dissertation sheds light on the intricate balance between managing heterogeneous stakeholder demands and dealing with the decision-making costs that emerge when their multiple demands are considered. It offers valuable insights into how governance structures can be designed to manage the tensions between diverse stakeholder interests, the decision-making costs of considering diverse interests, and the need for adaptation in changing business landscapes. The findings underscore the importance of considering both the necessity of inclusiveness regarding stakeholders' interests and the decision-making costs permeating deliberation mechanisms. This dissertation therefore contributes to the evolving literature on stakeholder governance by examining decision-making processes, their underlying theoretical determinants, and the mechanisms that decision-making forums may adopt to reconcile multiple stakeholder demands.Tese A Constrained BART Model for Identifying Heterogeneous Treatment Effects in Regression Discontinuity Designs(2024) Alcantara, Rafael Campello deEste projeto propõe o modelo BART-RDD, uma modificação dos modelos Bayesian Causal Forest (HAHN; MURRAY; CARVALHO, et al., 2020; CHIPMAN; GEORGE; MCCULLOCH, et al., 2010) que utiliza uma nova priori de árvore de regressão que incorpora a estrutura única de desenhos de regressão em descontinuidade (RDD). Especificamente, adicionam-se restrições ao processo de crescimento das árvores para garantir a presença de unidades tratadas e não tratadas em um pequeno intervalo em torno do valor de corte da variável que determina tratamento (ponto no qual o efeito do tratamento é identificado). Mostra-se que os modelos BART e BCF sem modificações estima efeitos de tratamento mal neste contexto, enquanto o BART-RDD identifica os efeitos de forma acurada. Ao mesmo tempo, este modelo preserva a flexibilidade inerente de todos os modelos baseados no BART, permitindo redução de variância e efetiva exploração de heterogeneidade nos efeitos de tratamento. Foram realizadas simulações que sugerem que o BART-RDD obtém considerável redução de variância ao custo de algum viés. Porém, esta redução de variância é grande o suficiente para compensar o viés, levando a um estimador que é mais estável que outros estimadores de RDD e modelos baseados no BART sem modificação em diferentes cenários. Ilustra-se a aplicação do novo estimador pela reanálise dos dados de Lindo, Sanders, and Oreopoulos (2010), que investigam o efeito de suspensão acadêmica na performance de estudantes em uma universidade canadense.Tese Essays on Education and Health Economics(2024) Prenhaca, Ivan GoulartEsta tese investiga os impactos duradouros de choques ambientais e intervenções políticas nos resultados educacionais e de saúde no Brasil. O Capítulo 1 examina os efeitos de chuvas extremas nos caminhos educacionais, utilizando dados do Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio (ENEM). Constatou-se que chuvas que excedem um desvio padrão da média municipal aumentam a taxa de absenteísmo no exame em 4%, afetando desproporcionalmente estudantes de baixa renda e reduzindo suas probabilidades de ingresso na faculdade até quatro anos depois. O Capítulo 2 analisa as consequências educacionais da seca prolongada no Nordeste do Brasil, utilizando dados de satélite para mostrar reduções de 8% no número de professores de escolas públicas e de 14% no número de professores de escolas primárias nos municípios afetados. As secas exacerbam disparidades na aprendizagem dos alunos e na progressão de série, especialmente em áreas com escassez de água. O Capítulo 3 avalia o impacto do aumento de financiamento para um programa de saúde primária. Utiliza um desenho de descontinuidade de regressão e constata melhorias iniciais na cobertura do programa e na implementação de equipes de saúde, mas sem impactos significativos a longo prazo nos resultados de saúde ou nas taxas de mortalidade. No entanto, o aumento do financiamento impulsionou a aquisição de bens não duráveis de cuidados primários em 25% nos municípios tratados. Em conjunto, esses capítulos oferecem insights sobre como choques ambientais e respostas políticas moldam o alcance educacional e os resultados de saúde pública no Brasil, destacando a interação complexa entre fenômenos naturais, fatores socioeconômicos e eficácia das políticas.Tese Essays in Applied Microeconomics(2024) Dal-Ri, FabianoEsta tese é composta por três capítulos independentes. Enquanto o primeiro capítulo é de autoria única, os outros dois capítulos são escritos em colaboração com diferentes equipes de pesquisadores. No primeiro capítulo, exploro eventos de demissão em massa para investigar a relação entre perda de emprego, trabalho por conta-própria e recolocação no mercado de trabalho. Concentro minha análise em torno de uma mudança de política em 2009 que reduziu significativamente as barreiras à formação de microempresas (ou seja, trabalho por conta-própria formal). Antes da mudança de política, o caminho do trabalho por conta-própria após uma demissão era seguido principalmente por trabalhadores de alta renda. Após a reforma, trabalhadores de baixa renda fecharam um terço dessa lacuna. Embora tanto trabalhadores de alta quanto baixa renda que optam pelo caminho do trabalho por conta-própria tenham entre 63 e 65 pontos percentuais a menos de probabilidade de retornar ao emprego assalariado, trabalhadores de alta renda enfrentam uma penalização salarial de 12 pontos percentuais, enquanto os trabalhadores de baixa renda são parcialmente protegidos de grandes perdas devido às legislação de salário mínimo. A mudança de política em 2009, ao tornar o trabalho por conta-própria formal mais atraente, não parece alterar esses padrões. No segundo capítulo, estudamos como a perda de emprego afeta a trajetória de emprego dos trabalhadores, com foco especial no impacto diferencial entre grandes grupos ocupacionais. Utilizando event studies em torno de eventos de demissões em massa em empresas brasileiras, descobrimos que, em média, os salários dos trabalhadores deslocados caem cerca de 26 pontos percentuais no ano seguinte à perda de emprego, e três anos depois, permanecem 20 pontos percentuais abaixo dos salários de trabalhadores não deslocados comparáveis. Para gerentes e trabalhadores técnicos, a penalização salarial é maior e mais persistente em relação aos demais trabalhadores. Apresentamos evidências de que essa diferença é provavelmente impulsionada por um efeito prejudicial das demissões nos gerentes e trabalhadores técnicos, que sofrem grandes perdas independentemente de suas opções externas e ocupações pós-deslocamento. No terceiro capítulo, analisamos práticas de gestão em unidades de atenção primária à saúde no Quênia. Adaptamos a World Management Survey ao contexto de saúde queniano. Nossas descobertas revelam que a qualidade geral da gestão nas unidades de atenção primária quenianas é notavelmente baixa, com uma distribuição caracterizada por alta compressão. Também estabelecemos uma associação positiva não significativa entre melhores práticas de gestão e a disponibilidade de medicamentos e vacinas essenciais. No entanto, utilizando dados administrativos abrangendo o período pré e durante a pandemia de COVID-19 (incluindo uma greve de trabalhadores da saúde), encontramos que as unidades de atenção primária privadas caracterizadas por melhores práticas de gestão enfrentaram significativamente menos interrupções na provisão de serviços, destacando a resiliência das unidades de atenção primária privadas bem geridas.Tese Essays on Labor-Market Frictions(2024) Bloise, Caio Romeu CerqueiraEsta tese investiga os impactos de se analisar modelos de fricções no mercado de trabalho e seus impactos nas variavéis macroeconômicas do Brasil e dos Estados Unidos. O Capítulo 1 examina os efeitos do seguro-desemprego em uma economia com informalidade, como a brasileira. Encontra-se que o aumento da duração do seguro-desemprego, por exemplo, aumenta o percentual de trabalhadores que coletam seguro-desemprego e vão para o setor informal ao mesmo tempo. Também é analisado o fato que, ao aumentar o tempo necessário para ficar elegível ao seguro-desemprego, a taxa de desemprego brasileira cai, principalmente pela criação de vagas formais. O Capítulo 2 analisa como a dívida pública interage com fricções no mercado de trabalho estadunidense. É construído um modelo de equilíbro geral com mercados incompletos e segmentação educacional, que mostra que quanto maior a dívida pública, maior o desemprego e menor o salário, via equilíbrio geral. Encontra-se, também, como consequências desses efeitos, que a dívida pública ótima é nula. Por último, o Capítulo 3 analisa o papel das firmas no crescimento salarial dos empregados formais em São Paulo, Brasil. Usando um modelo duplo de efeitos fixos, encontra-se que firmas acima do percentil 25 tem crescimento salarial e que firmas abaixo desse percential tem declínio salarial ao longo dos anos. Trabalhadores mais velhos, por exemplo, tem crescimento salarial menor que os mais novos. Além disso, mulheres e negros mostram crescimento muito abaixo dos seus pares.
