subcontinente.
The growing belief in neoliberal ideas about the functioning of the economy was striking among Latin American economies in the period from 1970 to 1990, especially in Chile, which was the pioneer among countries in the region to follow such a doctrine. Among the main reasons are the troubled and volatile history of the Chilean economy and politics and the erosion of the current capitalist model of accumulation, carried out and defended by the United States during the post-war period. Ahead of its neighbors, the Chilean economy early witnessed the ineffectiveness of developmental ideas and adopted the liberal philosophies originating from the Chicago Boys, premeditating what in the future would be some of the measures defined in the Washington Consensus, stipulated in order to remedy crises in the subcontinent.
