Artigo Científico A systematic literature review of citizen science in urban studies and regional urban planning: policy, practical, and research implications(2025) Beck, Donizete; Mitkiewicz, JulianaCitizen Science (CS) has been useful in research development and policymaking, where laypeople contribute to collecting and/or analyzing data. With the technological advancement of smart cities and data analysis techniques, CS helps foster efficient/sustainable cities and data-driven decision-making. However, more effort is needed to make CS more accessible for urban scholars and practitioners. Thus, we provided a comprehensive overview of CS in Urban Studies and Regional Urban Planning (USRUP) by revealing the main thematic/method approaches, stakeholder roles, socioeconomic/environ mental/policy impacts, limitations, best practices, and cases. Thus, we performed a Systematic Literature Review on CS in USRUP using the PRISMA Guidelines of 94 studies collected from the Web of Science Core Collection, published by 2023. Our key findings underscore the practical uses of diverse methodologies and approaches employed in CS projects, emphasizing their potential to enhance urban research and policymaking. The core socioeconomic impacts of CS projects are fostering community empowerment, engagement, and educational opportunities. The main environmental impacts are enhancing monitoring capabilities, improving ecosystem service assessments, and supporting adaptive management practices. As for urban planning and policies, CS projects can foster data-driven planning, urban sustainability, urban resilience, healthier cities, and social equity. CS challenges include data quality and consistency, the digital divide, and the need for sustained funding. Best practices have included clear communication, standardized protocols, and strong community engagement. Further developments should involve citizens in more analytical roles (rather than merely instrumental ones, like data collection) in CS projects and explore CS in social urbanism for transforming vulnerable communities.Artigo Científico Situated rationalities in response to institutional complexity: the role of management accounting practices(2024) Oliveira, Fabiano Siqueira de; Mendonça Neto, Octávio Ribeiro de; Oyadomari, Jose Carlos Tiomatsu; Wanderley, Claudio de AraújoPurpose – This study aims to explore how management accounting practices act as drivers of organizational change in situations of institutional complexity. Design/methodology/approach – A case study was carried out in a small company with a strongly rooted social culture, which was acquired by a large conglomerate and underwent a process of strategic change as part of a new control logic. Based on this, the study analyzes the evolution of this change, with a particular focus on the efforts to construct the meaning of the performance through the inscription of objects from the cultural system to which it is attached and the “situated rationality” of the managers who are involved in its production. Findings – The authors show how managers link their own concepts of performance to accounting practices. At the same time, the authors show how accounting practices unfold through representational gaps that their production generates. Research limitations/implications – This study acknowledges that bias may arise from reliance on retrospective views of past processes and events, gathered primarily through interviews, documentation and observations. Practical implications – This study highlights that the way in which the performance concept is presented by accounting practices can have a constructive effect on the organization through the aspirations that its representations entail, thus having the potential to stimulate change in organizations. Originality/value – This study contributes to the organizational literature by clarifying that accounting practices drive change by providing spaces for debates and questions that affect the way organizations understand and report their performanceArtigo Científico Internacionalização em varejo de moda: validação de modelo(2022) Alves, Carla Santin; Cassano, Francisco Américo; Oyadomari, José Carlos TiomatsuArtigo validou framework dos determinantes da decisão de internacionalização proposto por Park e Sternquist, testando em empresa de varejo de moda com operações no Brasil e em diversos países. Artigo Científico How do transaction costs, capabilities and networks influence the procurement strategies of small agri-food firms? Evidence from the wine industry(2021) BRUNO VARELLA MIRANDA; Ross, Brent; Franken, Jason; Gomez, MiguelPurpose – The purpose of this study is to disentangle the drivers of adoption of procurement strategies in situations where small agri-food firms deal with constrained organizational choices. More specifically, the authors investigate the role of transaction costs, capabilities and networks in the definition of feasible “make or-buy” choices in emerging wine regions. Design/methodology/approach – This article analyzes a unique dataset of small wineries from five US states: Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, New York and Vermont. The reported results derive from both a hurdle model (i.e. a probit model and a truncated regression model) and a tobit model. Findings – The results suggest the importance of trust as a replacement for formal governance structures whenever small firms deal with highly constrained sets of organizational choices. On the other hand, the level of dependence on a limited mix of winegrape varieties and the perception that these varieties are fundamental in building legitimacy help to explain higher rates of vertical integration. Originality/value – This study is important because it sheds light on organizational constraints that affect millions of farmers across the globe. The study of “make-or-buy” decisions in agri-food supply chains has mostly relied on the implicit assumption that all organizational choices are available to every firm. Nevertheless, limited capabilities and the participation in low-density networks may constrain the ability of a firm to adopt a governance mechanism. Stated organizational preferences and actual organizational choices may thus differ. Artigo Científico Determinant factors of banking proftability: an application of quantile regression for panel data(2024) ADRIANA BRUSCATO BORTOLUZZO; Ciganda, Rodrigo Ricardo; Bortoluzzo, Mauricio MesquitaThis study examines the determinants of bank proftability using a quantile regression approach, ofering insights into factors afecting banks across diferent percentiles of proftability. Utilizing a comprehensive database from Orbis covering 1200 top-market institutions across 101 countries, the research uniquely employs dynamic panel quantile regression while addressing sample survival bias. Our fndings highlight that bank size and capital adequacy nega tively impact proftability, whereas market value exerts a positive infuence on higher proftability banks. Credit risk afects proftability diferently across levels of proftability, and infation rate shows signifcance only for higher proft ability banks. The study contributes to the existing literature by ofering valuable insights into the factors determining bank proftability and how they behave at diferent percentiles in the sample, suggesting the importance of bank efciency and competition in promoting economic growthArtigo Científico Education and smoking behavior in Brazil: decision to smoke and daily cigarette consumption intensity(2020) Justus, Marcelo; Sant’Anna, Elder G.; Davanzo, Eloá S.; GUSTAVO MOREIRA TAVARESThis study analyses the relationship between education and smoking behavior. Our empirical models were estimated using data for Brazilian citizens from the 2008 Special Survey on Tobacco Addiction. We estimated probit, sample-selection, and zero-inflated negative binomial models. Empirical analyses for women and men were conducted separately. We found that higher education levels are associated with lower smoking probability and lower daily consumption intensity.Artigo Científico Urban Performance: A Systematic Literature Review Performance urbana: una revisión sistemática de la literatura sobre estudios urbanos(2024) Beck, Donizete; Ferasso, MarcosThe focus here is to explore and organize the literature of urban studies on urban performance and the main indicators used. This study applies a literature review analysing a sample of 47 papers gathered from the Scopus database. All of the selected papers are concerned with urban studies, urban management, and urban planning. This study provides a guide for scholars and practitioners containing the main indicators used for measuring urban performance and how they can effectively explore those indicators to produce better research and policies. Findings reveal a synthesis of the most used indicators for measuring the urban performance of the mainstream approaches in urban studies (socioeconomic and demographic; environmental; smart cities; urban design, built environment, and territory; public administration, government, and governance; energy efficiency; sustainability and sustainable development; transportation and mobility; benchmarking; and global cities). Also provided are how these indicators can be better explored by scholars and practitioners. The social and managerial contributions of this paper lie in its synthesis of urban performance indicators, which can be useful for scholars to improve their research as well as to enable urban planners and managers to work more efficiently with urban policies and thus improve the desired urban performance for one or various approaches.
