- Faculty experience and digital platforms in education(2022) Santos, Vanessa Martins dos; Cernev, Adrian Kemmer; Saraiva, Guilherme Marzol Montandon; Bida, Adriano GonçalvesPurpose Digital platforms have enabled the emergence of new business models by transforming the competitive scenario, labour, traditional management activities and strategies of the organisations regarding a number of productive sectors. The objective of this study is to analyse these changes in the educational sector from the view of professors who produce content in digital platforms, such as the massive open online courses (MOOCs). Design/methodology/approach In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 Brazilian professors using MOOC. The methodology proposed by Bardin (2011) and the board’s guidelines (2013) were used for content analysis. Findings Positive aspects such as autonomy, higher financial gains, geographic coverage, quality of life and cheaper and quicker courses were identified in the present study, whereas negative aspects were disclosure and sales performed by faculty members, problems with technical support, demand for new skills (e.g. digital marketing), new teaching methods and opportunities perceived by the professors. Research limitations/implications The results found cannot be generalised to different publics and contexts. Originality/value The results contribute to a better understanding of the new business models on digital platforms as they show evidence of how these techniques are contributing to digital transformation of traditional sectors. This model can be used to connect professors who produce content to those who want to learn as well as to enable remote operations in educational institutions. Additionally, managers, CEOs and entrepreneurs of the sector can use MOOC as a reference when formulating their strategies.
- Relacional: Easing the Crisis Effects in the Education Sector(2022) Cernev, Adrian Kemmer; Menegon, Letícia Fantinato; Maia, Marta de CamposThis teaching case addresses the need for change in Relacional’s business strategy, driven by the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Brazilian educational sector in the first half of 2020. - OriginalMy: Blockchain technology and business defying a 20th-century regulation(2020) Moraes, Trícia Karla Lacerda; Cernev, Adrian KemmerBlockchain is the century’s most notable technological innovation that is reshaping all industries. Notwithstanding, the technology needs to achieve maturity and address critical problems to generate real business value. Consequently, blockchain-based new ventures have been dealing with high-technology-associated pressures to enter this modern market. Most of them are still in the platform proliferation stage, struggling to face serious regulation challenges. Alternatively, there are successful cases in which wise strategic choices allowed companies to overcome the challenges and leverage their business successfully – OriginalMy is one of them. It is a Brazilian born blockchain-based venture aiming to decentralise notary and authenticity contributing to reduce excessive bureaucracy and eventually restrain corruption that is relatively common not only in their country but all over the world. This Teaching Case covers how the venture strove against unpredictable and unfavourable situations to fund and develop its blockchain business. It is supplemented by in-depth Teaching Notes where we craft a synthesised theoretical background to support the complex decision-making process through which the Chief Executive Officer defined the company’s fate amid such challenges and uncertainties concerning blockchain technology. The case examines the entrepreneurs behind OriginalMy, its growth, the difficulties it has faced, the upright issues surrounding it and its future outlooks. It draws on theory from high-technology market entry and the inherent pressures of this kind of entrepreneurship, sustained by the strategies and alliances that entrepreneurs can enact to address them.
- Contact tracing: Achieving equilibrium between blockchain solutions and privacy amid the novel coronavirus pandemic(2022) Moraes, Trícia Karla Lacerda; Cernev, Adrian Kemmer; Diniz, Eduardo HenriqueIn moments of scepticism and hopelessness, the drive to satisfy collective needs pushes humanity to accomplish incredible feats to ensure our survival on earth. Indeed, the current global crisis caused by the novel coronavirus is no exception. We are struggling with the abrupt spread of this illness and continuously striving to find efficient solutions. This has been André Salem Alégo’s primary inspiration since the crisis hit his country in March 2020. He is the chief executive officer of Blockforce, a blockchain-based SocialTech. Having observed the effects of novel coronavirus, André examined various approaches that could help contain the spread of the virus and keep society safe. He came up with the idea for an innovative service called Desviralize, which supports pandemic crisis monitoring through contact-tracing with the use of blockchain technology. This teaching case covers how an emergent technology evolves amid the pandemic. It draws attention to important facts related to the digital era such as data security and privacy in the context of Desviralize and Blockforce’s chief executive officer’s strategies for boosting platform growth within the constraints imposed by data protection regulation, the critical pandemic situation, and the ethical aspects of the application of technology.
