This study aims to explain Brazil’s educational performance during the pandemic in PISA, the international educational assessment conducted by the OECD. To this end, exploratory analyses were carried out comparing Brazil’s performance in PISA with that in SAEB, the national educational assessment exam. We show that there was no significant decline in performance in PISA, whereas SAEB recorded a substantial drop. Furthermore, we highlight that only about 5% of Brazilian students reach an adequate level of learning, according to the OECD classification. Subsequently, regression models were estimated to assess the effects of the pandemic on student performance. Our findings indicate that school closures had no significant effect on Brazilian students’ scores, and that access to digital resources for remote learning and to the internet were the most relevant factors in explaining student performance.
