The main objectives of this paper are to understand the reasons which motivated the many strategy shifts from commodity tradings since the late 20th century, and examinate the impacts of these changes in these companies’ profitability, and in the dynamics of other industries, such as Brazilian infrastructure, for instance. Looking into relevant historic events that have impacted commodity prices and the net income of the tradings, it could find a clear motivation for each acquisition, spin-off, asset sales or negotiation focus from these companies. Moreover, based on the industry’s history and the current context, the analysis was drawn towards which trading company strategies were successful in each commodity segment, and the potential for consolidation in the industry, in each commodity segment. In conclusion, the key factor that impacted the industry’s focus was the trading companies’ profitability, resulting from the commodity prices level, which motivated their verticalization towards infrastructure and logistic assets, aiming to reduce operating costs and expand their margins.
