negativamente relacionados com a economia e a atividade bancária. Durante as crises
expectativas.
In recent decades, Non-Performing Loans (NPLs) have become a subject of great interest in the literature due to their negative relationship with the economy and banking activity. During financial crises, an increase in NPL levels is expected, which, if not adequately addressed, can deepen and prolong periods of crisis. This detrimental effect is even greater in emerging markets and developing economies, as they suffer from the flight of investments by global creditors who need to repatriate their investments to balance their financial institutions' books during crises. The crisis generated by COVID-19 was termed by the IMF as the largest financial crisis since the last great depression. This dissertation analyzes the impacts that COVID-19 had on NPL indices in emerging markets and developing economies, using macroeconomic data such as GDP, unemployment, inflation, and interest rates in a panel, seeking to understand the changes in non-performing loan levels. It was expected to find a positive relationship between the crisis and NPL indices, but the result obtained was a slight reduction in NPL levels, contrary to expectations.
